His working out himself is no different to what I remember of Hilton as a young rider
Interestingly Hilton told me about how he works on his young charges cadence and then introduces bigger gears and more strength yet retain the same cadence. His knowledge is not just that of a coach of cyclists but also he understands the physiology and how to improve performances. Hilton now has Carl Brewer working with him and I reckon this is really good for cycling as they compliment each other and Carl as a much younger man not only assists Hilton including his data gathering and coaching but can learn plenty from Hilton.
I have seen blokes sit in the stand with a clip board whilst Hilton coached at DISC and take notes. I did not have the heart to tell them they were wasting their time, but in fact they were wasting time. Watching him giving a rider drills and understanding how that fits with the riders other workload is far from complete.
Anyway enough of that Hilton is doing well, he walks up the street and back and will soon be back out at DISC to chase you all up.
Have a good week.

( 3 / 1 )Am sitting looking out at the gloomy weather. It's been drizzly in my area for some time although I was up early to go out.
Might ride the ergo instead as I am not really keen to go out in these wet conditions at present. My health is fine but my cycling fitness poor but that does not matter at present. My pelvis is pretty good for 16 weeks this week but my lower back does lock up when I sit for a while.
Guess I am pretty lucky to have recovered in the timeframe I have but injury does set you back a bit, that's normal though whatever age.
Just take care and save your limited risk taking for racing not chasing Walley's up Beach Rd.
Have a good day.

( 0 / 0 )I wrote a lot of stuff on my own improvement over 500TT distance into my 60's to times I did not think possible for me. Not gonna waffle on about that again but I make the point.
There are many of you riders out there who have not reached your full potential as yet. Some never will because they are happy just to puddle along and enjoy cycling for fun and fitness.
Others of you have the ability and drive to do so. I have talked a lot about the benefit of coaching but assure you that NO coach can work magic on you. The work I did with Hilton was very specific and could never have done it without him. Nor could I have done it with a person of less knowledge and drive than him. So don't expect signing up with a coach will automatically bring you results. You MUST be motivated enough yourself as a coach can set you programs etc but you gotta do the work.
Coaching if you can afford, is very beneficial. Like if you go to a gym and do a structured program and review results ongoing with a gym instructor you will gauge your improvement and be motivated by this. ( Hilton always tested me at intervals as well as recording my times on training days so he know's what you are able to ride on race day). A person who goes to a gym and just does stuff themselves may not have the drive to improve and is not being measured against anything.
I have sat next to friends in the coffee shop when they have been talking about how good he or she could be, but that is TALK only. Results will only come from hard but planned work. Add-hock riding will deliver the same results for you, add-hock.
Don't know much about road tt's but saw enough of the TFM Celtic-Décor men training up Beach Rd to understand they do structured work outs during the week mornings. I think these men are all self coached but they have studied enough about various interval efforts to know what they are about and track their improvements. I mention them as a good reference point.
In closing if you don't want to work hard to achieve your full potential in your chosen event then I am sure you are just satisfied in riding.
Don't bore others with what you or others MIGHT have done. Or how good Freddy is because he won some wood duck race up Beach Rd. This means bugger all.
Cheers.

( 0 / 0 )Last night talking to Chris Halley on facebook he told me he came second in his Metro Championship race at Newstead yesterday. Conditions where fairly dry and from what Chris says it was not cold.
Chris keeps improving and has turned in very good results on track and road recently. Chris like many others will keep improving.
Sef Ives went well with the Women and came in about 7th with the bunch dad Dan tells me. Stef with hardened training and racing has got the ability to become a very competent female cyclist. Stef has only been in the sport for about 16 months so has plenty of improving ahead of her.
Am sure Mal or one of the scribes will post a report on the Metro's and our riders performances.
Cheers and have a good day.

( 0 / 0 )Talking to Peter Aquillina last night he was racing near Gent on Saturday afternoon. The race distance 120 k's and again on little narrow roads.
I reckon when Peter returns from Europe he will be all the better for his hard fast racing in big fields.
Have a good day. It's pretty bleak out in Ringwood at present so will see what it is like when it's light. Gonna drive to my son's and than maybe head down the beach a bit.
Will see what the weather is like first.
Safe riding.
