Today he came in 39th and is now 22nd on GC at 10 seconds, a fantastic result.
So many people have commented on Simon's riding ability and his consistent results. His assistance as a domestique in the World Road title to Cadel was evident of that. The fact the ACF selected Simon was evidence as to how highly he is regarded.
I sent Simon a message on facebook last night and he responded with thanks and saying that his good riding should assure him of a ride in the Giro.
Having seen Simon come up from a young rider in the club even in the time I have been back involved is great. To you young riders Simon should be inspiration to you if you have designs on becoming a top European Pro.
Simon is just so good yet his path has not been easy.

( 5 / 1 )So I can bore you all about my current status here is an update.
Today went to Physio Gary Cairnduff at Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre. He is happy with my progress and given me some more drills to do which will get me moving a bit, but no weight bearing. Will start pool in the next few days which will be a new phase.
There is no quick fix with this broken pelvis. the initial mend to strength will be 12 weeks but with work along the way. Gary has told me full recovery will be 6 to 9 months.
My legs are wasted away and soon I will be Little Steggles or Steggles No 2. Today I was looking at pictures of me track racing in 2006 yet looking at my legs now they are gone. They are like broomsticks in particular my quads.
Anyway enough of that by next summer it will all be built back up again, so something for me to focus on all winter. Tomorrow visit Box Hill Hospital to hopefully find out what my white blood cell problem is. Iám not concerned cos I feel bloody good.
Anyway hope you are well and ride safely.

( 3 / 1 )Sad to read about the passing of Lionel Cox. I met Lionel at Alice Springs in 2002 being the Masters Track Titles. Lionel came and spoke to me because I was riding my crome Cinelli track bike from the early 60's. His first comment to me was "I haven't seen one of those for 40 years".
Each time I raced in Sydney after that, at Nationals and Worlds he would always say hello and we would chat a bit. Lionel was before my time and don't recall him racing at North Essendon. Lionel did a lot of coaching of young riders in recent years. He was a legend of the 1952 Olympics but a real great man just to know.
He will be sadely missed from the Sydney cycling scene.

( 2.5 / 2 )Sitting around home it is easy to eat more than I should. Beth and our daughters are seeing I eat good food and plenty of variation. Kerrie has been bringing me up nice things and her homemade jam is great. I am doing real well.
Last week got on the scales and was 70kgs when 12 months ago was 65 to 66kgs. Now Hilton wanted me to put on weight going back to track TT and Sprinting but not get a big guts. Anyway I cut back a bit from last week and are now back to 68 kgs. Seeing I am not very big it does give me an understanding how big people put on weight so easily.
Not eating quite as msany goodies seeing Iám sitting around all day.
Have a good day and to those racing with Southern or at DISC with Northcote, enjoy your racing. Also the youngsters at Packer Park. The night's are closing in now.
Cheers.

( 2.7 / 3 )Am told on the 5.45am NNR this morning 6 to 8 riders fell. Firstly I hope everyone is okay as falls of any kind set you back a long way. Don't I know that!!!!!!!!!!!!
Secondly not knowing the circumstances it's not possible to comment on this unfortunate incident.
However I will say this. Falls happen for one of the following reasons:
Equipment failure
Poor judgement or unexpected litter on road or pothole etc.
Not riding according to conditions.
Inexperienced riders mixed in with experienced.
Riding stupidly.
Motor vehicles.
And so on.
Now a lot will say "we all know that", YES but too many take no notice.
It's no fun sitting on your backside gradually mending like I am or getting knocked around like Col,Wayne or Mick did, plus many others.
My message is, if you gonna ride out training in an unsafe manner then eventually you will fall, thats the facts. Racing is different it's the risk we all take knowingly.
My view, just ride safely.
