( 3 / 1 )Recently I was talking to Hilton Snr about the young riders and he was giving me some of his views on the future. He talked quite a bit about coaching and the need for the young riders to progress up through the system to national level if they have the ability.
While discussing the young riders he did say to me to watch out for Thomas Hamilton in the years to come as he can climb at such a fantastic rate. Thomas was with CCCC during the track season but has now returned to his home club Ararat.
They way Hilton was talking he could be a future Cadel based on his progress to date. I know speaking to Jack Cummings just prior to having my fall at DISC he was full of praise for Thomas's road racing ability.
If we look at how opportunity has evolved in cycling in the last 20 years or more, I believe the young riders have such a great future to look forward to in cycling.
Currently reading about Russell Mockridge and his progress through the 50's, young Australian's today, in contrast certainly have such great prospects today.
Cheers and safe riding.

( 0 / 0 )Well a bit less sleep last night as I watched the whole mountain stage of the Tour. Like the commentators I could not understand why Team Sky were busting their backsides on the first of the big climbs when Wiggins is not the strongest climber. The Astana guys were just so strong and I think Contador is in the box seat especially when the race gets into week three climbing. Great to see Cadet riding so well and whilst he may not want the leaders jersey yet I don't really think it will make any difference to the final outcome.
Armstrong was unlucky with that first fall and not being as young as a few years back just did not recover once they got him back on and the pressure increased. Armstrong is great he makes no excuses and I hope he finishes the race without any more falls. Young Andy did so well to win the stage and along with Cadel and Contador look the strongest. For mine without incident Contador is looking the best and if his climbers remain in good touch he should win again.
The one thing about all 7 of Armstrong's win's he was just so lucky that his ride over the paddock and the handbag fall, did not take him out.
No bikes for me at present Beth has been operated on in Box Hill hospital having her appendix taken out after all the pain. Her opp was done the old way, no key hole as they were further back than normal.
Hope your riding or racing went well on the weekend and at least Sunday was good weather.
Safe riding all.

( 4 / 1 )Congratulations to Pat on his award and to the Frankston Community for supporting young sports people. I have no doubt Pat will achieve his goal of riding the Tour de France one day.
The greatest pleasure I derive from cycling is seeing new people and young people come into the sport and ride to their full potential. Having seen Pat come up from a youngster racing at Parker Park when he was about 11 years of age with sister Jessie has been great. Dad Greg taking them to racing everywhere has given Pat every chance and now he grabs the opportunities he gets with the AIS.
From Pat's good results to date there is no doubt he will achieve his long term goal's but he is still young and plenty of time to develop.
Good on you Pat.

( 0 / 0 )Reading the report cyclingnews.com re the UCI supporting longer bans for worse infringements in doping is fine. My view would be that cycling gets the same treatment as all other sports who come under WADA. I do agree that riders caught taking EPO get off lightly with just 2 years holiday. I think those like Ricco who got caught taking the new generation stuff deserved heavier than 2 years given they thought the substance could not be detected.
I do not like seeing cycling treated as everyone's wipping boy alone however all other sports treated the same as cycling and athletics is fine.
Same for all.
