CCCC juniors at the Australian Junior Road Championships

We’ve been rather slack acknowledging the achievements of the CCCC juniors at the Australian Junior Road Championships at Stromlo Forest Park, Canberra.  If anyone has any photos that they’d like to share, or a more detailed race report (I’ve only got the CA-listed results to go on!) – please email them through to penny.robinson@carnegiecycling.com.au so I can put them on the website.

Firstly, congratulations are in order to the following CCCC juniors who were selected to represent Victoria in the State Team going to the Nationals after the Victorian Junior Road Tours and Victorian Junior Road Championships (in Wangaratta at the end of July):

  • James Tickner (Under 15 men)
  • Nina Greig-Towers (Under 17 women)
  • Jack Hickey (Under 17 men)
  • Jordan Stannus (Under 17 men)
  • Mathew Ross (Under 17 men)

From all reports, the weather in Canberra was dismal last week during the Australian Junior Road Championships.  Club coach Rob Koroknai reported that the drive up the Hume Freeway was a challenge – passing trucks, when he was only doing 80 km/hr due to the strong headwind on the way to Canberra!

Time Trial – Friday 7th September

In the Under 15 men category, there were 3 CCCC’ers competing.  James Tickner came 8th (average speed 38.6 km/hr), Ryan Koroknai 22nd (36.7 km/hr) and Trey Freeman 26th (35.97 km/hr).  Cameron Scott from Illawarra Cycling Club in NSW won with an average speed of 41.3 km/hr!

In the Under 17 men category, there were 5 CCCC’ers competing.  Mathew Ross got the BRONZE with an average speed of 45.8 km/hr.  Jordan Stannus came 13th (44.1 km/hr), George Hamilton 20th (43.3 km/hr), Drew Morey 26th (42.7 km/hr) and Jack Hickey 30th (42.4 km/hr)  Daniel Fitter from Sunshine Coast Cycling Club won with an average speed of 46.1 km/hr!

Road Race – Saturday 8th September

In the Under 15 men category, the same 3 CCCC’ers competed.  Ryan Koroknai came 12th (after getting dropped on the tailwind/downhill finishing section), James Tickner came 14th and Trey Freeman came 27th.

In the Under 17 men category, Mathew Ross came 14th (in the main bunch, who finished 1’26″ behind  a breakaway of 3 riders), Jordan Stannus came 21st, Drew Morey 35th, George Hamilton 37th and Jack Hickey DNF’ed.

Criterium – Sunday 9th September

In the Under 15 men category, Ryan Koroknai finished 8th, Trey Freeman 22nd and James Tickner 35th.

In the Under 17 women category, Nina Greig-Towers finished 13th (after not starting the time trial or road race).

In the Under 17 men category, there were 2 heats – and the top 25 riders in each heat made the final.  All CCCC’ers who entered made the final – Jordan Stannus won Heat 1.  In the final, Jack Hickey got the SILVER (behind Jack Edwards from Penrith Cycling Club – finishing in the same order as the JM17 scratch race on the track earlier this year, which was a photo finish!)  Jordan Stannus came 10th, George Hamilton 43th and Mathew Ross 44th.

Links to the results are available on the CA website here: http://cycling.org.au/?ID=47255

Of the 5 medals that Victoria won at the Junior Nationals (http://vic.cycling.org.au/default.asp?Page=47693), CCCC’ers won two of them.

Well done to all CCCC’ers who competed.
