The dismal forecast obviously scared quite a few riders from making the trip down to the island, but once again those who made the trip were treated to a sunny afternoon and some great racing.
The A and B Grade wins went to riders who attacked early and defied the chasers to bring them back. In A Grade, Michael Gallagher (Jayco VIS) and Ben Johnson, who had both ridden great times in the morning time trial, got away from a break of six riders in the last two laps to fight out the win, with Gallagher continuing his Paralympic preparations with a confidence boosting win. Croydon Cycleworks duo Marc Wilson and Tyler Spurrell led the chasers home.
Matt Bennett (Cycling-Inform) spent most of the B Grade race out front, working with a few different riders. Only Dennis Toce had the strength to stay with him to the finish, with the impressive youngster recording a good win. Taj Chopra and Rick Jones (Burnley Finance) rounded out the podium.
The C Grade bunch sprint went to James Harrison from Nick Kennedy, Paul Yeatman and Ed Smith (Kelly Cycle Coaching), while Annina Schillig’s constant efforts to shed the D Grade bunch eventually saw her home in second place, with only William Truong able to get the better of the Austrian Paralympic hopeful.
